When I was a child, Uncle Freddy's visits always started wonderful playtime. Once, he arrived unannounced as I was making mud pies. I ran and gave him a muddy squealing hug and kiss.
When Mom protested at the mud trail I left all over him, he said, "Don't worry, Sis. It'll wash."
Mom frowned.
Unruffled, Uncle Freddy swung me onto his brand new black patent leather shoes, hummed a waltz, and danced me around the pine floor of the living-room.
But I always knew when it was his last day to visit. Uncle Freddy would get his German beer-stein and sit in the family room, caressing the silver-domed lid before pressing it for a sip that he's swish in his mouth before swallowing. Lost in thoughts as his fingers traced the beer-stein letters, he would not hear me calling him.
After finishing the beer, he's turn the stein to face the sunlight shininh through the window. This made the silver-domed lid gleam like Mom's furniture on polishing day.
Uncle Freddy would give a final tap to his beer-stein, smile broadly, and call "Goodbye" as he left.

Taking a leap of faith
Boy, oh boy, does a good critique group help find the faults in a new writing. I dug out an old short story that I like that was written about two years ago. I couldn't decide if first person or third person should tell the tale of a new prison system in 2035. I used third person even though I thought first person would worked. I learned I should have listened to myself because the group felt that first person was the route to follow. A good critique group gives so much to a writer and allows a writer to learn from others and to spot potential improvements in other people's writing.

One Writer's Life
Blogging is the new way to "talk" to others who want to learn about writers or writing. Thankfully, I love to talk. I'm a 'late bloomer' in entering the writing life and I'm loving to learn the neccessary techniques to create a novel or short stories. The what if game is so much fun to play. Wherever I go, I can play this game since it only involves thinking. When driving, I notice license plates like 929 AVM. That can be turned into an adress like 929 Avenue M. Then I get to dream up a house and family to occupy it or create a business that is ready to go world wide. Bottom line, it's all in the details and how they can become something in a story waiting to be told.
